Action Amos, the Vice President of International Bureau of Epilepsy – Africa Region said “investing in economic empowerment of persons with epilepsy has proven to a path to reduce poverty. We think empowering persons with epilepsy to rise out of poverty is essential for the sustainable development of any country.”

According to the statement by the Vice President, he cited Mauritius as leading by example as they have managed to develop a sustainable partnership worth replicating with ‘Foodwise’, (a Non-Governmental Organisation) to ensure that the needs of persons with epilepsy are covered during the COVID-19 period and beyond.

The International Bureau for Epilepsy Africa Region (IBE-AR) endeavour to ensure the condition (epilepsy) becomes a health priority in the continent. Epilepsy Africa has tried to accomplish this milestone through empowering and equipping chapters and their individual members with various skills training and promoting their various initiatives at country level. This has helped in a big way to promote the epilepsy agenda and make information available utilising various media channels to educate and enlightens communities.

With the current economic climate in South Africa exacerbated by the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic many people are unemployed, jobs are very scarce, the situation is worse for people with epilepsy. The South African National Epilepsy League (SANEL) provides a guide in its latest publication for an entrepreneur needs to take into account for them to succeed in South Africa, which includes strategic thinking, networking and communication skills, resilience among others.
